Gavin and Alex Whitehurst were recently presented with a Command Coin and a thank-you letter from Cmdr. Randy Meador, commanding officer of Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City. Gavin, a fourth-grader at Camden Intermediate School, and brother Alex, a first-grader at Grandy Primary School, learned that Coast Guard members and civilian employees in the area were going without a paycheck during the recent government shutdown. In response, the Whitehurst brothers asked their parents to donate a portion of their Christmas money to help the Coasties and federal workers going without a paycheck. The money was delivered to the Coast Guard Coalition Food Pantry.

Master Chief Lyn Dupree presented the Whitehurst brothers with the Command Coins and read the letter from Meador during a presentation in front of their classmates, teachers, parents, and Superintendent Joe Ferrell. In his letter, Meador stated that he was "extremely honored to know that there are kids out there who have such amazing hearts."
