Camden teams win at Mattamuskeet

SWAN QUARTER — J.R. Williams and Anthony Cordy combined for 22 points as the Camden boys’ basketball team took care of Mattamuskeet 56-36 on Tuesday.
The team’s first game of 2017 helped break a losing streak at three. Brock Colson hit three 3-pointers and Zach Robeson added seven points as Camden (9-3, 6-0 Coastal 10 Conference) warmed up for a Friday encounter against Plymouth.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing in Hyde County after holding just a one-point lead at halftime. A 16-7 spurt in the third helped create some distance.
Perquimans 70, Columbia 59: Before Wednesday’s non-conference game against Currituck, the Pirates earned a Coastal 10 victory at Columbia.
Perquimans (7-3, 6-1) is at Gates on Friday.
First Flight 89, Pasquotank 70: Four Nighthawks scored 10 or more to take down visiting Pasquotank.
Tyler High put in 22 points while Devyn Dodson posted 18 for First Flight, who again shot plenty from the 3-point line and connected on 12 trifectas.
Pasquotank (2-7, 1-1 Northeastern Coastal Conference) is at Currituck on Friday.
Bertie 45, Edenton 42 (OT): The Aces lost their fourth-straight with an overtime setback to the Falcons on Tuesday.
Trailing 14-5 after the first quarter, Edenton (2-4, 0-2 NCC) climbed back into contention with a 25-point third period. Neither team scored in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Camden 46, Mattamuskeet 13: Nicole Villardi scored 10 points to lead the Lady Bruins on Tuesday.
Jaycie Staples and Abby Williams combined for 16 points. Shae Ferebee had six steals to pace Camden (5-7, 4-2 Coastal 10 Conference).
Perquimans 66, Columbia 24: The Lady Pirates remain second in the Coastal 10 after blasting Columbia.
Next for Perquimans (6-4, 6-1) is a game at Gates on Friday.
Pasquotank 52, First Flight 41: A 17-point and 14-rebound effort by Amaya Simpson helped hold off the host school in Kill Devil Hills on Tuesday.
Dazia Williams and Kennedy Griffin each scored 11 as Pasquotank (5-4, 1-1 Northeastern Coastal Conference) has now won three in a row.
Bertie 53, Edenton 41: The Lady Falcons remained undefeated after shutting down Edenton.
The Lady Aces (3-2, 0-2 NCC) were led by Kneciya Tripp’s 11 points while My’Keyah Bunch added 10.
Currituck went 3-0 during a quad meet the team hosted on Tuesday while Northeastern was 2-1. Manteo and Hertford County were the other squads involved in the matches.
In the Knights’ 44-33 victory against NHS, the team got points off of forfeits as well as pins by Cam Hamm (138 pounds), Chris Franco (285) and a major decision by Michael Culpepper (145) and Dominic Burke (126).
Northeastern went on to top Manteo and Hertford County. In the victory against the Redskins, Scott Marazoff scored a pin in 48 seconds at 113 pounds. Trevon Harvey squeezed out a 10-9 decision at 152.
In a tri-meet hosted by Pasquotank, it was Edenton who finished undefeated.
The Aces beat First Flight (51-28) and the Panthers (48-25).
Nearly the entire spread against Pasquotank came via forfeit wins. In the 11 matches, Pasquotank took six but just two by pin with David Thompson (126) and Devin Alcorn (195).
All of the Aces’ victories came via pin. Winners were Skylar Riddick (106), Nata Rankins (120), Day’Veion Williams (132), Jake Bass (138) and Ky’Vaughan Rome (220).
