Athlete of the Week: Oliver a team leader

John A. Holmes softball player Alexis Oliver has been named athlete of the week by the staff of the Chowan Herald.

The senior catcher also has played third base and first base for the Aces.

Out of the 18 games she has played with the Aces this season, she has a batting average of .443 with 27 hits, 30 runs and 29 RBIs. Of her hits, Oliver had nine doubles, one triple and five home runs.

Equally as impressive is the fact that Oliver has six stolen bases this season.

During Friday’s 20-1 win against Pasquotank County, Oliver hit a home run. She scored two runs in the 13-1 win against Gates County on April 12.

The multi-sport athlete also plays basketball and volleyball for the Aces.

Oliver who was an All-Area standout for the Aces this past spring signed to Division II Mount Olive.

“Everything felt right,” said Oliver, of the school in a previous interview. “It felt like I was at home. All of the coaches and players there, they have a wonderful staff.”

While Oliver has played volleyball and basketball, she said softball has always been her drive.

“I’ve focused on it ever since I was young” she said.

Aces coach J.P. Pippins had high praise for Oliver.

“She’s a leader and probably the hardest worker you will find,” Pippins said. “She’s the first ones grabbing the tees and setting things up for practice, and a teacher for the younger girls.”
