WILBERFORCE, Ohio — The Elizabeth City State football team defeated Central State 34-23 on Saturday in its season opener.

ECSU senior quarterback Daquan Neal threw for over 200 yards and connected on multiple touchdown passes.

Neal also had a rushing touchdown.

Running back Gregory Bryan ran for 106 yard with a touchdown.

ECSU (1-0) trailed 14-0 in the second quarter.

Central State (0-1) controlled the time of possession in the first half.

Following the Marauders’ second touchdown, Bryan put the Vikings on the board on a 64-yard touchdown run.

ECSU trailed 14-7 at halftime.

After surrendering a safety on their first offensive possession of the third quarter on a mishandled snap, the Vikings scored 27 consecutive points in the third and fourth quarters to take control of the game.

After spending a good amount of time on the field in the first 30 minutes, the ECSU defense forced Central State into multiple turnovers in the second half.

ECSU was credited with four interceptions in the game as BJ Harrington was credited with three picks, while Jonathan Turnage had an interception.

The Vikings also recovered a fumble.

Miacah Cooper led ECSU with 12 tackles, while Vincent Thomas added 11.

The Vikings finished with 265 passing yards, while adding 141 yards on the ground.

Deon Yarborough led the Vikings with six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Perquimans product SayQuan Holder had five catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Up next, the Vikings welcome North Carolina-Pembroke for their home opener at Roebuck Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.

UNC-Pembroke lost to Winston-Salem State 34-31 in its season opener on Thursday night at home.
