John A. Holmes senior baseball player Ben Ward was named the winner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete essay contest.
The NCHSAA made the announcement on Monday.
According to the NCHSAA, winners were chosen blindly by a panel of judges with criteria that included originality, content, organization and grammar.
As part of the program, the NCHSAA offers the essay contest annually, with student-athletes submitting a 400-word essay each semester.
The Fall 2017 semester’s prompt asked had student-athletes to write about the different responsibilities they have as a scholar-athlete. One male and one female winner were chosen from the pool of entries.
Alyssa Wright of Lincoln Charter High School was also named a winner of the contest.
This is the second achievement received by Ward from the NCHSAA.
Ward was Edenton’s recipient of the association’s sportsmanship award when the Aces advanced to the 2A state championship in baseball in June.
Edenton won the series two games to zero against R-S Central.
Joey Daigle was the Hilltoppers’ recipient.
