Snow storm wipes out basketball, swimming

A snow storm that hit the area late Wednesday night into Thursday morning has forced the postponement or cancellation of multiple athletic events in the area.
On Thursday, Elizabeth-City Pasquotank Public Schools announced school would be closed for students on Friday.
That postponed the boys and girls basketball contests between Northeastern and Bertie.
NHS was scheduled to travel to Windsor on Friday to face the Falcons in a Northeastern Coastal Conference matchup.
The contests in Bertie were rescheduled to Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Also postponed on Thursday were Northeastern’s basketball games on Saturday at John A. Holmes.
The contests between the Eagles and Aces in Elizabeth City are scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
Currituck’s first home conference games of the 2017-18 season against Hertford County on Friday were postponed.
A new date for Currituck to host Hertford County has not been finalized.
Bertie, Hertford, Perquimans, Currituck, Camden, Gates and Edenton-Chowan schools announced on Thursday that they would close their school systems on Friday.
The swimming meet at Albemarle Family YMCA scheduled for Friday was canceled.
Elizabeth City State University announced on Thursday that Saturday’s men’s and women’s CIAA basketball contests at the Vaughan Center against Johnson C. Smith were postponed.
No new date to play the games have been announced.
Preliminary snow measurements released by the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia noted that between four to 10 or more inches of snow fell in northeast North Carolina in the past 24 hours.
