Three weeks after the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team was involved in a brawl with some spectators following its game at Virginia State University, the investigation into the incident remains open.

Virginia State University police and public safety records manager Walter Butler confirmed to The Daily Advance on Tuesday that the investigation is ongoing.

Moments after the Jan. 24 men’s basketball game at VSU’s Multipurpose Center, some spectators engaged ECSU basketball players, which led to a brawl in the stands behind one of the baskets.

Multiple videos of the incident were posted on social media by spectators following the encounter.

Butler confirmed that the “disorderly conduct” incident listed on the Virginia State University criminal incident information log refers to the brawl at the basketball game.

VSU released a statement on the incident on Jan. 25:

“On January 24, 2018, after the Trojans Men’s Basketball game, physical altercations started as the Elizabeth City State University Men’s Basketball team departed from the basketball court to their locker room. The Virginia State University (VSU) Police Department responded to the incident and is conducting an investigation, which may lead to criminal charges.

We are deeply distraught, appalled and disturbed that a great game of basketball and sportsmanship ended with such absurdity.

In moving forward, the Athletics Department and the VSU Multipurpose Center will work even more closely with the Virginia State University Police Department to increase the security at every athletic game.

We are and will always be deeply committed to the safety of our students, employees and visitors. To the Elizabeth City State University family, we sincerely want to apologize for our display of unsportsmanlike conduct.”

ECSU, which lost to VSU 67-64 on Jan. 24, hosts Virginia State on Saturday for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader at the Vaughan Center.

After getting swept on Saturday at Lincoln (Pa.), the ECSU men’s and women’s basketball teams return to action today in a pair of CIAA games at Fayetteville State.

The ECSU men (10-12, 3-9 CIAA) lost to the Lions 69-54 on Saturday. The Vikings faced the Broncos in Elizabeth City on Jan. 17 in a non-conference meeting.

Shyheid Petteway scored 15 points as the Vikings defeated Fayetteville State 63-62.

Fayetteville State (7-16, 4-8 CIAA) defeated Livingstone 78-73 on Saturday.

The Lady Vikings (9-15, 2-10 CIAA) enter the contest on a four-game losing streak after an 82-70 setback at Lincoln.

The Lady Vikings lost to FSU 79-53 on Nov. 24.

The contest in late November was designated as a non-conference matchup.

The Lady Broncos (12-9, 7-5 CIAA) have won eight consecutive games and lead the CIAA Southern Division.
