According to multiple sources, Shawn Walker Sr. will be named the men’s basketball coach at Elizabeth City State University.

ECSU announced on Thursday morning that a press conference will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. to announce a new coach.

Walker, an alum of ECSU, previously served as the Vikings men’s basketball coach from the 2002-03 season through the 2013-14 campaign.

While at the helm, Walker led ECSU to the 2007 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament championship.

Walker left ECSU to become the men’s basketball coach at Grambling State University in 2014.

Walker led the Division I Tigers for three seasons and compiled a 25-68 overall record.

Walker, a native of Roper, took over a Grambling State program that was under the cloud of NCAA sanctions.

According to published reports, Walker’s contract with Grambling State was not renewed after the 2016-17 season.

Walker played for the Vikings in the mid-1990s.

Walker will take over the ECSU program from John Hill who was fired in April after leading the men’s basketball program for the 2017-18 season.

Dwayne Saunders has served as the interim men’s basketball coach since Hill’s ouster.
