WILLIAMSTON — The John A. Holmes boys soccer team defeated Riverside 3-1 Monday evening at Riverside High School.
Riverside entered the match with a 5-0-2 record.
Edenton tied the Knights 0-0 nearly two weeks ago.
Edenton moved Isaiah Bembury to outside fullback, which improved the Edenton defense.
In the center of the midfield, the Aces (4-4-1) were able to connect passes and build the offense.
Riverside's cohesive defense had given the Aces trouble in the previous match; but Monday, the Aces were able to break down the Knights backfield with effective use of width.
Edenton’s Jake Bass played beautifully on right wing and sent many dangerous balls into the space before the goal.
Evans Mason, assisted with a delicate incisive diagonal pass from his brother, Wilson, from the left wing, lofted a beautiful 30-yard rainbow that sailed over the keeper and found the inner side netting.
Marsel Zidan functioned often as a distributor, engaging both of Edenton’s central midfielders and the wings.
As Edenton’s width opened the middle, Marsel capitalized twice — once to open the scoring and again late to seal the victory.
“I was deeply gratified by the boys' response to the two very difficult late losses we recently sustained,” Edenton coach Thomas Di Martino said. “Instead of folding under the knuckles, the boys gathered themselves and came out throwing leather, carrying the fight to a worthy opponent, and producing their best work of the season to date.”
Gates 9, Perquimans 1: The Pirates (0-7, 0-1 Albemarle Athletic Conference) scored their first goal of the season in a loss at Gates Monday.
Calvin Moore scored for Perquimans in the conference match.
