EDENTON — The Colonial Individual tennis tournament concluded Sunday afternoon at John A. Holmes High School.
For the second consecutive year, the two-day tournament was held in October.
The Colonial featured individual men’s and women’s singles, junior singles along with doubles and mixed doubles tournaments.
The finals for all the tournaments were held Sunday.
Kermit Nixon won the men’s open singles tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Sydney Spear won the girls junior championship (15 and under) 7-5, 6-4.
The tournament features area athletes spanning multiple age groups that play for the love of the sport and also to remain active.
Jackie Kretzer partnered with Kim Mascolo in the women’s doubles consolation final match Sunday.
The duo won their match 6-3, 7-5.
“I live in Edenton and I played last year,” she said. “It’s always a fun time.”
Kretzer said that she normally plays doubles tennis on the courts at John A. Holmes High School on the weekends.
She added that the tennis community in Edenton is growing.
“There’s a lot of older people, like me, that play a lot,” Kretzer said.
For Kretzer, there are many aspects of tennis that she enjoys.
“Exercise, camaraderie,” she said. “You meet a lot of good people.”
