Knights, Eagles advance at NCC girls tennis tournament

Currituck and Northeastern had athletes advance during the first day of the Northeastern Coastal Conference individual girls tennis tournament Monday at Northeastern High School.
In girls singles quarterfinal matches, Northeastern’s Emma Teachy defeated Bertie’s Taylor Scott 6-2, 6-0.
Currituck’s Elizabeth Hewitt, the No. 2 overall seed in the singles tournament, defeated Northeastern’s Jaycie Gregory 6-3, 6-2.
By advancing to today’s semifinal matches, Teachy and Hewitt earned automatic berth to the NCHSAA Class 2A Individual East Regional at Greene Central High School on Oct. 19.
Teachy, the No. 4 seed in the singles tournament will face No. 1 seed Sammie Lilliston from First Flight in a semifinal.
Lilliston defeated Currituck’s Marley Renner 6-0, 6-0 in her quarterfinal match Monday.
Hewitt will face No. 3 seed in First Flight’s Gray Tillet in the other semifinal today.
Tillett defeated Bertie’s Kristen Teal 6-2, 6-1 in a quarterfinal match Monday.
In doubles, Northeastern’s doubles of Madeline Twiford and Ellie Hornthal and Olivia Sanders and Brooke Overman both earned quarterfinal wins Monday.
Twiford and Hornthal, the No. 4 seed, defeated First Flight’s Siena Nason and Pia Jastrzemski 6-3, 7-5, while Sanders and Overman defeated Currituck’s Grace Waters and McKenna Sweeney 6-3, 6-0.
The two NHS doubles teams also clinched berths to the 2A East Regional by advancing to the tournament’s semifinal round.
Twiford and Hornthal will face the doubles tournament No. 1 seed Alyssa Byrum and Lindsey Dickens from Bertie in a semifinal, while Sanders and Overman take on First Flight’s No. 4 seed Courtney Tillett and Allison Hudson in the other semifinal.
The championship matches for both singles and doubles are scheduled to be held after semifinal matches today at Northeastern.
Area high schools have made adjustments to their schedules with the remnants of Hurricane Michael expected to impact the region later this week.
Perquimans’ varsity home football game against Albemarle Athletic Conference foe Gates has been moved from Friday to Wednesday night.
John A. Holmes has moved its junior varsity football game against Northampton County from Thursday to Wednesday night in Edenton.
Edenton’s home varsity football game against AAC rival Washington County moves from Friday to Saturday night at John A. Holmes.
Camden’s home junior varsity football game against Manteo is now Wednesday.
The Albemarle Athletic Conference girls tennis individual tournament at Manteo has been moved from Thursday to Wednesday afternoon at Manteo High School.
As of Monday afternoon, a decision had not been announced on Northeastern’s home football game against Northeastern Coastal Conference foe Currituck along with Pasquotank home NCC game against Bertie and Camden’s varsity road conference football game at Manteo.
All three football games are scheduled to be played Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Michael is expected to strike Florida’s panhandle this week.
The storm is expected to move quickly across southeastern United States and through northeast North Carolina by the end of the week.
