Former Northeastern High School defensive back William JR Walker committed to continue his football career at Virginia Tech.

Walker, now a senior at Clayton High School, made the announcement during a press conference at Clayton High School Friday afternoon.

Walker selected the Hokies over Football Bowl Subdivision programs Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and South Carolina among others.

“First I want to thank the man upstairs for everything he has done in my life, everything he is doing, and everything he has planned for me in the future,” Walker said in a statement posted on his Twitter account after the announcement.

“I want to thank all the coaches who recruited me over my high school career. I want to say thank you to all my family and friends, my teammates, and my two high school head coaches, without you guys pushing me and showing me support and love, no telling where I would be right now. I also want to give a special thank you to my parents who have believed in me when their were times I didn't believe in myself. I thought long and hard about this decision, even tho[ugh] the choice was a tough one, but god has [led] me to the right choice. With that being said, I will continue my academics, and pursue my football career at The University of Virginia Tech.”

The defensive back, listed at 6-foot-1, 198 pounds, transferred from Northeastern to Clayton this past spring.

According to an interview with HighSchoolOT.com in July, Walker noted the reason for his transfer was that his father, William Walker, received a job offer at Clayton.

In the interview with the website, the younger Walker noted that he wanted to follow his father to Clayton.

The elder Walker is an assistant coach on the Clayton football team.

Before transferring to Clayton, Walker played three seasons at NHS and was named an Associated Press All-State team performer at defensive back for the 2017 season.

After the 2017 campaign, Walker along with former teammate at NHS Traveon Freshwater took part in the U.S. Army All-American game combine in Texas in January.

According to recruiting websites 247Sports.com and ESPN.com, Walker is a 4-star recruit, while Rivals.com rates Walker a 3-star recruit out of five stars.

In seven games with Clayton this season, Walker has 22 tackles with an interception.
