The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the brackets for the volleyball state playoffs for Classes 1A through 4A Monday.
Four area teams earned bids to the state playoffs.
In Class 2A, Currituck (16-6) earned the No. 2 seed in the East Region and will host No. 31 seed North Johnston in the first round today at 6 p.m.
Currituck won the Northeastern Coastal Conference regular-season championship for the fourth consecutive season this fall.
North Johnston (12-8) finished in third place in the Eastern Plains Conference this fall.
Northeastern (7-9) earned the No. 32 and final spot in the 2A East Region.
The Lady Eagles travel to No. 1 seed Ayden-Grifton (20-1) in the first round today at 6 p.m.
NHS finished third in the Northeastern Coastal Conference this fall.
The Chargers posted an undefeated record en route to the Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season championship.
In Class 1A, Perquimans (21-2) secured the No. 2 overall seed in the East and will host Albemarle Athletic Conference foe No. 31 seed Gates (8-15) in the first round today at 6 p.m.
The Lady Pirates, the AAC regular-season champion, defeated Gates three times during the regular season.
Camden (18-5), the No. 11 seed in the region, will host AAC foe and No. 22 seed Manteo (9-9) in the opening round today at 6 p.m.
Camden defeated Manteo three times during the regular season.
Second round matches are scheduled to be played Thursday.
Freshwater earns honor
Northeastern senior running back and linebacker Traveon Freshwater was named to the 2018 Shrine Bowl as a member of Team North Carolina.
The bowl game released the rosters for North Carolina and South Carolina Sunday.
Freshwater has 598 rushing yards with seven touchdowns on the season at running back.
He also has 51 total tackles on the season.
Freshwater will be joined on the team by former Northeastern defensive back William JR Walker.
Walker, who is now a senior at Clayton High School, earned a selection to the team.
Northeastern head coach Antonio Moore will serve as an assistant coach on the team.
The Shrine Bowl named coaches to the 2018 game after the 2017 season.
The 2018 Shrine Bowl is scheduled to take place Saturday, Dec. 15 at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Currituck's Bailee Twiford shot 5-over-par 77 during the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A/2A girls golf state championship tournament Monday at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club's Grey Fox Course.
Twiford, a senior, posted two birdies during the opening round to land in third place.
First Flight's Katherine Schuster shot 4-under-par 68 to lead the tournament after the first round.
Schuster, the tournament's defending champion, had five birdies during the round.
Mallory Fobes of Forbush is in second at 2-over-par 74.
The second and final round of the tournament is today.
