A former Elizabeth City State assistant football coach was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Tuesday.
Marcus Hilliard was named the AFCA's 2018 Assistant Coach of the Year in NCAA Division II.
Hilliard is currently the assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach at Virginia Union University.
Hilliard was of five coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division, II, Division III and NAIA that were awarded.
“Once again, five outstanding assistant coaches have been selected for their dedication, not only to their teams, but to their communities,” said AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry in a statement. “Oftentimes, the head coach receives much of the credit for his team’s success, but any head coach is only as good as his assistants. Much of an assistant coach’s work is done behind the scenes. It is our pleasure to bring it to the forefront.”
Before joining the coaching staff at Virginia Union before the 2018 season, Hilliard spent 14 seasons as an assistant football coach at ECSU.
The 2017 season was his last at ECSU before accepting a position at VUU.
