The 2017-18 high school wrestling season was one to remember for area programs.
The wrestling schools in the Daily Advance’s coverage area had a state champion in Pasquotank’s Darrien Stutz along with multiple state qualifiers and regional champions.
Currituck, John A. Holmes, Northeastern and Pasquotank return multiple state and regional qualifiers this winter.
Edenton and Currituck will try to defend their regular season championships.
Here is more on area wrestling:
Coach: Paul Bossi
Outlook: The Knights will be challenged to win another 2A Northeastern Coastal Conference team title this winter.
Currituck does return key wrestlers in Samuel Hodge (113 pounds), Noah Walker (126 pounds) and Trent Walker (160 pounds).
All three along with Hunter Forehand at 120 pounds had good results at the Pierce-Davis Memorial Tournament Saturday.
Tyler Sunderlin (132 pounds), Cole Hampton (152 pounds), Aiden Herring (170 pounds), Mark Dutton (182 pounds) and Keegan Lassiter (220 pounds) will contribute this season.
JOHN A. HOLMES
Coach: Lenny Plummer
Outlook: The Aces are the favorites to claim the American Athletic Conference team crown this winter.
Manteo will be Edenton’s top challenger in the league.
Edenton returns eight starting wrestlers from last season.
The coaching staff notes the Aces will have a young team, but the wrestlers have an intense work ethic.
Because Edenton-Chowan Schools has a strong middle school wrestling program, Edenton’s young wrestlers on the team will make an impact this winter.
The Aces are also waiting for some football players to join the wrestling team once the season on the gridiron ends.
Edenton’s veteran wrestlers include Riddick White, a junior, at 113 pounds.
Last season, White advanced to the 1A East Regional.
Aaron Jones, a sophomore will compete at 120 pounds.
Jones advanced to the regional last season.
Dezmontre Gilliam will wrestle at 170 pounds.
At the Pierce-Davis Memorial tournament Saturday, Gilliam finished in third place at 160 pounds.
Jordan Huerta (138 pounds), Nathan Hansley (145 pounds), Trace Murray (152 pounds), Jonathan Salinas (160 pounds), Dawson Cullipher (195 pounds) and Seth Simmons (285 pounds) are expected to contribute.
Coach: Larenzo King
Outlook: The Eagles return seven starters and a group of athletes that advanced to the regional and state championship individual tournament last season.
Scott Marazoff (126 pounds), Jonathan Ward (132 pounds), Dylan Herman (195 pounds) and Raven Atkins (220 pounds) were all state qualifiers last season.
Ward won the 2A East Regional title at 138 pounds last season.
Nikolas Payne (106 pounds), Braxton Tucker (138 pounds), Bryan Woody (145 pounds), Isaiah Cartwright (152 pounds), Jamison Fletcher (170 pounds), Tristan Barr (182 pounds) and Amir Payton-Kimble (285 pounds) are expected to be in the lineup this season.
Coach: Jonathan Sutton
Outlook: The Panthers will be without notable performers from last season in Stutz and Javiaughn Basnight.
Both are wrestlers at the college ranks this winter.
The Panthers will attempt to defend their Northeastern Coastal Conference individual tournament title later this season.
Thong Tran at 152 pounds, Devin Alcorn at 285 pounds and Travis Douglas at 106 pounds are the top returners for the Panthers.
Scott Kresicki (120 pounds), Carlos Cardenas (145 pounds) and Kobe Keller (195 pounds) have contributed early in the season.
