The Elizabeth City State athletics department will honor one of its greatest teams in the history of its men's basketball program today.

The 1968-1969 Vikings will be honored for their 50th anniversary season during ECSU's winter homecoming men and women's basketball doubleheader against Chowan today.

During the 1968-69 season, ECSU posted a 29-4 overall record and won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament and the NAIA District 29 tournament championships.

ECSU finished the regular season with an 18-2 record in the CIAA.

The Vikings defeated then CIAA member Norfolk State 89-86 in the CIAA tournament championship game in Greensboro.

The Vikings then advanced to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Missouri and finished fourth in the 32-team tournament.

The 1968-69 team featured coach Bobby Vaughan and player Michael Gale.

Gale and Vaughan are members of the ECSU Sports Hall of Fame.

Gale played in the NBA (National Basketball Association) with San Antonio, Portland and Golden State from 1976-1982.

He also played in the ABA (American Basketball Association) from 1971-1976.


The Vikings return to game action after a week off.

Their last game was a 88-87 double overtime loss at Bowie State Feb. 2.

ECSU (11-12, 7-5 CIAA) lost to Chowan (12-9, 5-7 CIAA) 64-55 Jan. 19.

Chowan fell to Salem in a non-conference contest on Wednesday.

Timothy Bing leads the team averaging 17.3 points per game. Demetrius Sanders chips in with 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds. Gus Rowland adds 14.8 points, 7.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per night. Michael Kelly rounds out the double-digit scoring with 11.3 points and 7.6 rebounds.


The Lady Vikings (13-10, 5-7 CIAA) lost their last game 70-53 at Bowie State Feb. 2.

In their first league game of the season, ECSU defeated Chowan 58-47 at Chowan Jan. 19.

Chowan (11-11, 7-5 CIAA) lost to Salem in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Danielle Weldon is coming off a 33 point and 20 rebound outing against Salem. Weldon leads the team with 13.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Weldon sits with 910 career points.

Jada Lee and Mariah Coker chip in with 9.6 and 9.0 points respectively.
