CHARLOTTE — The Elizabeth City State women's basketball team defeated Shaw 77-55 in the opening round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball tournament Monday night at Bojangles' Coliseum.

Asia Deal led ECSU with 22 points, Naterria Luster followed with 19 points, while Jalyn Brown posted 14 points in the win.

Luster and Devona Stell added 12 rebounds each.

Macy Keen paced Shaw (7-22) with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while RaQuel Kellow followed with 14 points and Amani Moxley added 10 points.

The Lady Vikings (14-15) will face Winston-Salem State in another opening round contest today at 4:30 p.m. at Bojangles' Coliseum.

ECSU also ended a losing streak in the opening round at the CIAA tournament Monday.

ECSU lost its only matchup of the season against Winston-Salem State on Jan. 14 as the Rams secured a 78-65 win at home.

In that contest, Luster led ECSU with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Brown followed with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Deal added 11 points.

Amaya Tucker led WSSU with 23 points, Brionna Pate added 22 points and 17 rebounds.

Winston-Salem State (15-13) finished in third place in the CIAA Southern Division during the 2018-19 regular-season.
