CHARLOTTE — The Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team defeated Winston-Salem State 62-61 in overtime Tuesday night in the opening round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at Bojangles’ Coliseum.

ECSU (14-15) led the majority of the five-minute overtime period.

Justin Faison and Joseph Allen led ECSU with 10 points each, while Corey Mendez followed with nine points in the win.

Winston-Salem State (12-15) was paced by Julius Barnes and James Rucker, who both scored 14 points, while Robert Colon followed with 13 points.

Both teams struggled shooting from the field as ECSU finished shooting 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from from the field, while the Rams shot 34.8 percent (16-of-46) from the field.

The Vikings faced Virginia State in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA tournament Wednesday night.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Elizabeth City State 65, Winston-Salem State 49: The Lady Vikings (15-15) upset the Rams in another opening round game of the CIAA women’s basketball tournament at Bojangles’ Coliseum Tuesday evening.

Devona Stell paced ECSU with 19 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocks, Naterria Luster followed with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Jalyn Brown posted 12 points, five rebounds and six assists in the win.

Winston-Salem State (15-13) struggled shooting from the field as it finished 24.3 percent (18-of-74) shooting in the game.

ECSU shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field.

Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 11 points and five rebounds.

She was the only player for Winston-Salem State to score 10 or more points in the game.

The Lady Vikings will face Bowie State (22-4) in the quarterfinal round of the women’s tournament today at Spectrum Center at 1 p.m.

ECSU lost both regular-season matchups against Bowie State this season.
