Three Vikings earn all-CIAA tournament honors

CHARLOTTE — Three athletes from the Elizabeth City State men's and women's basketball programs were named to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association all-tournament team Saturday.
ECSU men's basketball player Joseph Allen was named to the all-CIAA men's basketball tournament team, while ECSU women's basketball players Jalyn Brown and Asia Deal were selected to the all-CIAA women's basketball tournament team.
Virginia State 77, Shaw 66: Virginia State University held off a strong second half rally to defeat the Shaw Bears in the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Championship game Saturday afternoon at the Spectrum Center.
The Bears battled to turn a 31-point second half deficit into single-digits but their rally fell short despite a game-high 34 points from Junior Amir Hinton, who also finished with five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Junior DaVaughn Kelsie added 17 points and freshman Geremy Taylor chipped in 12 points and four rebounds.
The Trojans were led by Jahmere Howze with 28 points and 12 rebounds. He was named to the All-Tournament Team and Tournament MVP for his efforts.
Virginia Union 75, Fayetteville State 41: Shareka McNeill broke the CIAA Tournament scoring record with a 37-point effort as Virginia Union University won its second consecutive CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship with a 75-41 win over Fayetteville State Saturday afternoon at the Spectrum Center.
With the win, the Panthers (27-2) receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament where the team is expecting to be the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Region. The back-to-back championships are the Panthers’ first since they captured the 1981 and 1982 tournament titles. The Broncos conclude their season with a record of 21-8.
