WILSON — The Albemarle School baseball team defeated Greenfield School 2-0 Tuesday night in the semifinal round of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Class 1A state playoff game at Fleming Stadium.

With the win the Colts (8-9) advance to the NCISAA state championship series against the defending back-to-back state champion and No. 1 seed Kerr-Vance Academy.

Albemarle School, the No. 6 seed, scored runs in the first and third innings.

Albemarle School's Tanner Simpson went 1-for-3 with a RBI, Logan Dunn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Raymond Hooper posted a hit in the win.

Albemarle School's Cole Langley, a freshman, pitched five innings, gave up two walks and posted six strikeouts, while Simpson — a junior — pitched two innings, gave up two walks and posted four strikeouts.

The Colts’ pitchers gave up one hit in the game against Greenfield (14-7-1) which won the Coastal Plain Conference championship this season.

The state championship series will be held in Henderson.

Game 1 of the best-of-three state championship series is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Game 2 is noon Saturday and if necessary, Game 3 is 30 minutes after the end of Game 2.

The school will have a send-off for the team Friday at noon on the school grounds.

SOFTBALL

North Johnston 4, Currituck 3: The Lady Knights lost in the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state playoffs at North Johnston Tuesday night in eight innings.

Currituck (18-4), the 2A East Region No. 6 seed, overcame a 3-1 deficit in the top of the seventh inning with two runs to tie the game at 3-all.

North Johnston (20-5), the No. 3 seed, scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eight to advance to the fourth round.

BOYS TENNIS

Franklin Academy 8, John A. Holmes 0: The Aces (13-6) ended their season in the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A dual team state playoffs at home Tuesday evening.

The match was originally scheduled to be played Monday, but inclement weather Monday postponed the match to Tuesday.

Franklin Academy (10-4) will face Research Triangle (18-1) in the fourth round of the tournament.
