Stehlin, Steamers battle back to knock off Mustangs

EDENTON — The Edenton Steamers defeated the Martinsville Mustangs 12-10 Saturday night at Hicks Field.

With Martinsville up 10-3, Edenton (18-15, 5-2 second half) began its rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jordan Fitzpatrick began the frame with a solo home run.

Two batters later, catcher Marc Ochoa hit a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 10-6.

The Steamers added two more runs in the frame on a Kenny Oyama RBI triple and on a Mason Holt RBI single to trim the Mustangs’ lead to 10-8.

Edenton took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh.

The Clams earned back-to-back walks with one out in the inning.

Jake Evans brought the runners home on a RBI double to tie the game at 10-all.

With runners on first and third base, the Steamers took the lead on an Anthony Stehlin single.

During the play, the Martinsville second baseman committed an error, which allowed Ochoa to score from first.

Martinsville (14-22, 4-6 second half) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Josh Smith solo home run.

Edenton’s Brycen Thomas tied the game at 1-all with a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning.

Smith hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Smith went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while teammate Tyler Riebock went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Stehlin posted three RBI, Ochoa went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI and two walks, Thomas went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Ian Walters posted an RBI double, while Evans posted two RBI in the victory.

John Dowless pitched two innings in relief, did not give up a run, gave up three hits, a walk and posted a strikeout to earn the win.

Sean Hughes struck out the side in the ninth for the save.
