EDENTON — The Northeastern High School girls’ tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 7-2 non-conference victory against John A. Holmes Monday afternoon at John A. Holmes High School.

Edenton’s Lilly Bunch defeated Northeastern’s Olivia Sanders 8-4 in No. 1 singles.

In No. 2 singles, Northeastern’s Ellie Hornthal topped Sydney Spear 8-2.

Madeline Twiford secured a win for NHS in No. 3 singles with a 9-8(9-7) victory against Carson Ray.

Edenton’s Bailey Rinehart defeated Gracie Pierce 8-5 in No. 4 singles.

Northeastern’s Zoe Pureza defeated Caroline Stoltz 8-2, while NHS’ Chloe Redd defeated Olivia Hart 8-2 in No. 6 singles.

Northeastern (1-0) swept the doubles matches against Edenton (0-1) as Sanders and Twiford won their No. 1 doubles match against Bunch and Spear 9-8(7-4).

Hornthal and Pureza defeated Ray and Rinehart 8-3 in No. 2 doubles and Pierce and Redd won the No. 3 doubles match against Stoltz and Hart 8-1.

Edenton hosted Riverside High School Tuesday.


Pasquotank 9, Perquimans 0: The Panthers (1-0-0) secured the win against the visiting Pirates (0-1-0) in the season opener for both teams Monday night.

The Panthers were led by Jalen Haist who scored five goal and had two assists in the non-conference match.

Hunter Winslow added three goals and an assist to the Panthers attack.

Darsh Patel contributed a goal and an assist, with two assists provided by Izzy Saleem.

Chandler Walton also delivered an assist in the victory.

Matthew Harrel recorded his first clean sheet of the season coming up with big saves when called upon.

Perquimans returns to action today at the Perquimans Parks and Recreation soccer field against Southside for its home opener.


Currituck def. Camden 25-20, 25-22, 26-24: Currituck (1-0) secured the non-conference win over the Bruins in the season opener for both teams Monday night at Camden County High School.

Merritt Woodson paced Currituck with 17 kills, two aces, a block, nine digs and three assists, Amree Powers had 31 digs, two assists and an ace, Macy Pace had six kills, an ace, five blocks, with a dig and Taylor McCarthy posted 27 assists, 10 digs and three kills.

Whitney Shilling posted eight kills, three aces, a block, three assists and eight digs, while Skyler York posted 10 blocks with three kills in the win.

Camden (0-1) hosted Pasquotank Tuesday.

Cape Hatteras def. Northeastern 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18: The Hurricanes (1-0) secured the road non-conference win at Northeastern Monday night.

Northeastern (0-1) faced Gates in Gatesville Tuesday night.


John A. Holmes announces fundraiser: The John A. Holmes High School athletic boosters announced Tuesday that it will be raising money that will be donated to the Pasquotank County High School Athletic Department in memory of Logan Grubb.

A presentation will be made during halftime of the Aces' first home game against Pasquotank on Sept. 6.

Donations can be dropped off at the John A. Holmes High School main office.

Change in schedule: Northeastern's season opener against D.H. Conley was moved from Friday night to Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The change was announced Tuesday morning. There is a chance of inclement weather Friday.
