CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) — One of the seven Marines who died in a mortar explosion during a training exercise in Nevada was from North Carolina.
The military late Wednesday released the names of the victims, who range in age from 19 to 26. They were part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune.
One of the victims has been identified as 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Mason J. Vanderwork, of Hickory, N.C.
The military says Vanderwork was a Hickory native who was last deployed in 2011 to serve in the war in Afghanistan. Vanderwork joined the Marines in June 2010 and was promoted to his current rank by August 2011. He received several awards including the National Defense Service Medal.
