Clearing snow claims two Burke County lives

MORGANTON — The cleanup after most of North Carolina was buried under heavy snowfall is being blamed for the deaths of two Burke County residents.

Emergency Medical Services Major Jason Black said Friday that both people were are thought to have died from heart attacks after trying to clear accumulating snow.

Black said a woman in her late 40s was shoveling snow during the height of the storm Wednesday night, went inside her Valdese home and collapsed.

Black said a Morganton man in his 70s was clearing snow with a snow blower and shovel Thursday morning when he collapsed.
