ROXBORO, N.C. (AP) — Investigators say a Person County deputy shot a man who pointed a gun at him while trying to run away from a traffic stop.

Authorities said 21-year-old Jovien Ross Jr. was a passenger in a car pulled over in Roxboro around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

A deputy told Ross to close his door during the stop. Instead, investigators say Ross started to run and pointed a gun at officer Benjamin Massey.

Authorities say Ross was shot in the hand and thigh. He was taken to a hospital, and his condition is not known.

Deputies say Ross will face charges when he is released from the hospital.

Massey has been placed on leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting.
