SHELBY, N.C. (AP) — Work crews with the N.C. Department of Transportation are monitoring conditions in the region after heavy rains forced the shutdown of several roads.

A statement from the department said the Rocky Ford Road bridge over the South Fork of the Catawba River in Catawba County is closed because of flooding. The bridge design allows water to flow across the structure without damaging it, but the flooding makes the bridge unsafe for motorists.

Crews are also reporting closures at Balfour Road and Hoopers Lane in Henderson County, saying it typically takes about 24 hours for the water to recede on those low-lying roads.

In addition, crews are monitoring water levels along Butler Bridge Road at Jeffress Road in Henderson County, but the road remains open.
