HOPE MILLS — Animal control officials say a fox that attacked a Cumberland County woman, her child and their dog has tested positive for rabies.

Cumberland County Animal Control director Dr. John Lauby said the woman was in her yard, playing with her 2-year-old son and their dog when the fox came into the yard and attacked them.

According to animal control, the fox bit Johnson when she tried to stop it by grabbing it and throwing it. A release from animal control said the fox then began to attack the dog's leg before the woman's husband killed the fox Sunday night and called animal control.

Lauby said the fox was sent to the State Veterinary Lab in Raleigh for testing, and he learned Tuesday that the test was positive.
