CHARLOTTE — Charlotte police have arrested a man on dog fighting charges and rescued 14 pit bulldogs.
Police said they discovered what appears to have been a dog-fighting operation when they conducted a drug investigation last week. One dead dog was at the house.
Capt. Chris Dozier says investigators think the location could have been a training site for the animals. Dozier says it did not appear that fighting occurred at that location.
Thirty-year-old Daran Dejuan Goines is charged with drug trafficking and dog fighting and baiting. It was unclear if he has an attorney.
A second man faces only drug charges.
Officers also confiscated two rifles and two handguns.
Police say the eight adult dogs and six puppies are being treated at the department's animal shelter.
