ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man has died after his Halifax County home burned down on Christmas Eve.

Davie Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Padgett told the Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids ( ) that the mobile home was engulfed in flames when his fiefighters arrived around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Padgett says his firefighters tried to rescue the victim before completely extinguishing the fire, but they could not get to him.

Authorities say the fire appeared to begin near a couch the man was on in the living room. The cause of the blaze is being investigated, but Padgett says it doesn't look suspicious.

The man's name has not been released because his family has not been notified.
