WHITEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A fisherman has drowned after falling from his boat in a canal in Whiteville in Columbus County.
The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/13vhZg0 ) it happened Monday beneath the U.S. 74-76 bridge.
Columbus County Assistant Coroner William Hannah says 70-year-old Paul Formyduval of Castle Hayne was fishing with his wife at the time.
Authorities say the couple saw a nest of birds beneath the bridge and the victim stood up to look at the birds. When he did, the boat overturned.
Neither was wearing a lifejacket. But the victim's wife was able to grab one as she was thrown from the boat and make it back to shore.
