RALEIGH — Gov. Pat McCrory is criticizing Coastal Carolina University for allowing its basketball team to travel during this week's winter storm for a trip that eventually lasted almost 21 hours.

McCrory told a news conference Friday that officials need to put the safety of players, coaches and the public over an athletic event.

Chanticleers' athletics spokesman Mike Cawood says the team waited a day to return from a Wednesday night game against VMI in Lexington, Va., leaving about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. N.C. Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Charbonneau says the bus was blocked because two tractor-trailers had jackknifed ahead of the school's bus on Interstate 77/74 in Surry County.

Cawood says the bus arrived in Conway, S.C., about 5 a.m. Friday. He says no one was ever in danger.
