RALEIGH — North Carolinians will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and public inauguration of President Barack Obama with observances, calls to service and celebrations.
The King holiday and Obama's second inauguration ceremony outside the U.S. Capitol both occur Monday.
The N.C. Democratic Party is hosting an inaugural ball Monday evening on Fort Myer outside Washington. Several hundred people were expected to attend. The Asheville High School marching band was scheduled to perform in the inaugural parade Monday afternoon. Obama was officially sworn in Sunday in a smaller White House ceremony.
Back in North Carolina, scores of King events were scheduled Monday. Gov. Pat McCrory was slated to participate in a Triangle-area King breakfast at a Durham hotel. The new governor urged citizens to participate in service projects.
