JACKSON, N.C. (AP) — A Northampton County sheriff's deputy has been fired after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.

The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids reported (http://bit.ly/Yd4qjK) that Sheriff Wardie Vincent said Lt. Cory Jackson was let go Monday.

The 41-year-old Jackson was convicted by Judge W. Turner Stephenson III of assault with a deadly weapon last week. The conviction stems from a Jan. 15, 2012, shooting where Jackson fired his gun while investigating a suspicious person call.

Vincent testified that Jackson's firing of warning shots violated the sheriff's office policy and did not comply with the teaching of the North Carolina Justice Academy.

Defense attorney Jamal Summey says Jackson's charges are being appealed to Superior Court and he could not comment on the firing.
