SKYCO, N.C. (AP) — The public has an opportunity to see the newly completed research and education campus of the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Skyco along the Croatan Sound.
An open house for the public is scheduled for Saturday afternoon on the 200-acre campus.
The institute addresses coastal issues and topics that concern northeastern North Carolina. Its research focuses on four main areas: estuarine ecology and human health; coastal engineering and ocean energy; public policy and coastal sustainability and maritime heritage.
The academic research and education institute was found in 2003 as part of the University of North Carolina system. Its university partners include East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina State University, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Wilmington.
The building was dedicated and officially opened in January.
