Scion -- Toyota's youth-oriented spinoff -- beefed up the boxy xB for 2008 and eliminated a smaller hatchback known as the xA, replacing it with the all-new Scion xD. The xD is a versatile hatchback that makes the most of its subcompact interior. It's frugal transportation costing less than $16,000 and with fuel economy around 30 mpg, making it appealing to drivers of all ages.

WHAT'S SPECIAL:
The xD is designed not so much to haul you as your iPod. There are two ways to plug your iPod, or other MP3 player, into the 160-watt sound system. You can then control your iPod with the steering wheel audio control buttons.
WHAT WE LIKE:
There are a number of nifty features that make the most of the xD's limited interior space. The niftiest: cubbyholes built into spaces around the spare tire beneath the rear cargo mat. There are also two glove boxes.
WHAT ISN'T THERE:
Electronic stability control -- unless you're willing to pay an extra $650. The otherwise long list of safety features includes four-wheel anti-lock brakes and side curtain air bags front and rear.
YOU OUGHTA KNOW:
The xD's 128 horsepower won't make driving a thrill, but the car isn't like dial-up Internet, either. Acceleration is as quick as you need it to be. The four-speed automatic is smooth and absent the harsh whine found in some econo-cars. The car feels bigger than it is and there is some comfort in that.
COMPETITORS:
Scion's market segment -- compact cars -- has become a popular one over the past year or so as gas prices have continued to climb. Also, people are drawn to the low price of these cars. Other popular entrants in this field include the Chevrolet Aveo, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. The Fit deserves praise for its roomy interior and its speediness -- don't let the small engine fool you.
WHO DRIVES SCIONS?
Scion, which carved out its niche by aiming for young, hip drivers, has done well in that demographic. Younger folks like the personalization and its outside-the-mainstream aura. But it's also been a hit with older drivers because of its practicality and user friendliness. If you've got an on-the-go lifestyle and want a quality vehicle without having to spend a lot, Scion is the choice.
EXTRAS:
Scions come the way they come. The only option with the xD is electronic stability control. Happily, standard equipment includes air conditioning, remote keyless entry, CD player and power steering, windows, door locks and mirrors. Also standard is decent legroom front and rear. The rear seats slide up-and-back and recline 10 degrees if folks in the back want to nap. Rear seats fold flat to expand cargo space.
AND ANOTHER THING:
While the rear seat comfortably seats two, only one of them can be thirsty. There is just one cupholder in the back seat.
