Dell to spruce up its corporate laptops
Dell is planning to add a bit more style and a few new technologies to its line of business notebooks.
A recent peek at the new Latitude laptops showed a black, textured exterior, an edgier shape and a logo offset to the side instead of the middle. (Please pardon the amateur photography from yours truly…)
The laptops almost certainly will carry the new Intel Centrino 2 chipset expected to be released tonight. Few other details on the new laptops were forthcoming.
Separately, Dell said today it will offer a download to facilitate multi-touch capability on its XT tablet computers, and said it would start selling 128-gigabyte solid-state drives in its high-end notebooks.
Because of their durability, solid-state drives are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional hard drives with spinning disks. Dell will begin selling the 128-gigabyte version for $649 in its corporate notebooks. It will add them to its Alienware gaming systems next week, the company said.

Dell has had some real customer support issues lately and hopefully using the Intel graphics chipset, the problems won’t increase. Intel graphics were named in a Vista class action lawsuit so hopefully won’t be an issue going forward for Dell.

I stopped buying Dell laptops long ago after having a bunch of problems and with terrible support. I use HP only now—much better.

JSS, Dino, Paul Horn, and idickie@yahoo…. learn to read! They’re for their corporate customers, not consumers. Dell’s Business segment is completely different from their Consumer. All the bad press over the last couple of years is on their Consumer side, which is less than 20% of Dell’s total business.

I have been using Dells at home for years and have had no problems at all with their support. I especially like the new tool they use to let the Dell technician use your computer like he is sitting right next to you, so much easier than following all of their technical instructions. I previously had an HP and had serious problems with their support. I don’t understand why people say that Dell support is bad… maybe they have never tryed to reach or speak to HP support.

Aditya, Dell offers many options for its business customers through a department called CFI (Custom Factory Integration). They can get custom asset tags with logo and contact information for their business applied to the system straight from the factory. I’m not sure about laser etching, but it may be an option as well.
