OLF in Camden? How can this be good?

It came as a surprise to most local residents and area officials that Camden County would be considered a potential location for Navy jet fighters to practice landings. Yet, oddly enough, a task force set up by Gov. Mike Easley has selected two Outlying Landing Field (OLF) sites in Camden and two more in Gates as alternatives for the Navy to consider. We don’t think this is good for Camden or Gates. What’s your take?

We in NENC relish our peace and quiet, of course. But would you prefer the stillness of death that could result if our Navy aviators are denied a practice field in this region? The “sound of freedom” is still the best noise of all. And yes, I am a Navy veteran, of its aviation division no less, so I am, quite naturally, biased in my opinion.

We need our forum back. If we are to engage and defeat this, we need a platform. Much good came from the forum which was taken down. You may judge for yourself, but I consider this blog a pale substitution for what we had. In the whole time this blogspot has been up, what is the total number of posts? A mere handful. The OLF is a disaster for Camden. In the grand scheme, it is better than Dumpzilla, but it will be an economic disaster. The only thing good about it is it will render the whole northern part of the county unfit for housing and schools. Of course, this will just push development pressure to the south of the county.

Samprabbit you wrote: “The OLF is a disaster for Camden. We need money in this county. Where, besides raised taxes, is it going to come from? Development pressure: Who has been giving the county this, I would like to shake their hand! If there is something out there that can or would benefit the county better than “the sound of freedom”, please let everyone know about it!
