Do counties need an official language?
The Dare County Board of Commissioners recently voted to make English the county’s official language. The terms of the resolution indicate that county officials want immigrants to join the local culture and community, and that learning and understanding the English language is part of that process. Officials from other local counties are not currently considering a similar resolution. Most officials apparently do not see the need for an official language. The point seems moot anyway, since there’s no way to enforce the resolution. What are the pros and cons of the resolution?

I’m told and not really Happy that they are preparing for a huge growth in Hispanic Community. Provideing services to Illegal or legal immgrants is costing the American Tax payers Billons (338+ Billon) a year and that starts at the County, State & Federal Goverments. That ain’t chump change. They also send back 45 Billon back to their Home Country.Yet we have to provide them all the services that some Americans don’t quilty for and their AMERICANS, We have to Wake Up and stand up to our elect officals, they are the ones that pass the laws. The President can only deal with what they give him. He does not make the laws.Dealing with immgration is costing Us more then the war is. They say were paying 10 Billon dollars a month on the war. Divide 12 into 338 Billon dollars and see how much that is a month!! Go Figure. God Bless Our Troops & The USA

Of course the other counties aren’t considering the resolution. They don’t have the foresight needed. Dare has experienced the influx of multiple languages first hand. That is the only reason they are acting. If the other counties would open their eyes they would benefit from Dare’s experience. We already have to spend untold amounts of money on teaching English, outside of the traditional English classes to those who don’t know it. Someone who needs to learn English outside of the traditional English class should pay for the class with their income. Our teachers should not have dollars diverted from their salaries to compensate special teachers to teach English in an English country. The politicians are not taking immigration seriously and this problem is only going to get worse. It needs to be known before someone decides to come to America that we officially practice English and English ONLY.
I would never go to another country and expect them to accomodate me when it comes to language.
This whole situation is money driven. Of course it is, what isn’t, unfortunately. I however, believe standing on principle can be more important.

I am glad to see you have speeded up the process of posting responses. I have to admit I lost a little interest in this blog because of the long delays.
After reading and commenting on Robert’s blog I realized I hadn’t checked to see if anyone else commented on his article. I went back to it to see if there were other comments and was shocked to see my comment on there. Then I checked this one and once again saw my comment so I am assuming since two responses posted quickly the delay has been removed.
I saw the reference to this important subject in my print version today. I have a tendancy to catch up on the weeks worth of my paper version on Sunday’s.
After rereading the blog statement I realize I didn’t specifically address pros and cons.
Pros - We never know what kind of a movement might be started in the future to require another language. This will slow the movement down if not kill it altogether. - It serves as a tie that binds. English built America and that is good enough for me.
Cons - None!

It appears we can Thank “Slick Willy” for thr Press One for English. I read he signed an Excutive Memo to the effect that if there was someone that couldn’t understand or read english then the goverment would set up a program to help those folks that didn’t understand english etc. So now this gives You,The American, how all this got started. It has gone way beyond “Press One For English” English is the spoken lanuage in this Country and it is suppose to be the officale lanuage of the USA. As Teddy Roosevelt stated, There is Only One Lanuage in this Country and that is English. If You have come to this Country, then You should learn the lanuage and the American way of life. This is America!!! God Bless Our Troops & The USA
