Turkey Bowls

Yesterday, when I shot some pictures of some pickup football games, I got the chance to go in for about a dozen plays. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not in the best shape, but I had some fun just getting out there and playing for a bit.
I had to do something on those Thanksgiving morning games, because they were such a bit part of my Thanksgivings in the past. I haven’t played in one since college, but it made me want to get out and do it again. Maybe I can get in better shape for next year and do a little more than go out for a couple of series.

The BCS system is a little better than how things were done previously but with any system there are flaws. A playoff system would be wonderfull. Reality is that the fans could not afford to support it. Break out paper and pencile. Add up the price of tickets, three night minimum hotel, travel, food. Forget that you just bought Christmas presents. Rejoice in the opertunity to go to three games.

Not even the well to do fan can not afford to spend three concecutive weekends on the road during the holiday season in the big cities. The couch potatoes can complain but those that support the programs and actually shell out the bucks to make the machine work know that, it ain’t perfect but we cain’t afford perfection.

There is nothing like a little chill in the air to bring out the competitive spirit. Being over 50 I have decided to watch rather than participate. I wanted to comment on the BCS System and why a playoff is not practical.

Money makes the world go round and college football is big money. I am a Clemson fan and had season tickets for over fifteen years before moving here from Charleston SC. I paid my IPTAY, which origionally stood for I Pledge Ten A Year, now a few more zeros are required, contribution for the privilidge of purchasing four season tickets. During the fall I would make the four hour ride five to six times for home games. That took a big chunk of my “disposable income”.

Normally after the season was over I was presented with the opertunity to go to a Bowl Game. Normally the wife and I would go to every other one, too expensive to take the kids. It is Christmas time and like most people we normally spend too much. Atlanta and Jacksonville were favorite destinations because we could drive and avoid the air fare. We had friends in both cities and could stay with them to avoid the hotel minimum of three nights at premium rates.

Bowl games are expensive. The average to fairly confortable income fan can spurge every now and then. I could not afford to go every year and the majority of fans can not either. Without the fans filling up the hotels, bars and resturants it does not work. The pay outs to the schools exceed the gate reciepts, where does the money come from? Corporate sponsors, TV revenue and the local business community wanting to bring in the bowl dollar. Each city proudly welcomes in the fans from both schools.

A playoff system would produce a truer champion and please the couch potato, BUT it is financially imposible for fans to support more than one out of town trip, three would be imposible. The bowls would go bankrupt.

Check it out, one of X number of playoff teams expected to purchase a minimum of 15-30 thousand tickets at $75-$150 face value.

Look at the logistics. Honey, Sweethart this is our potential schedule, make hotel reservations and book the air line tickets, and pay the fee so that we can cancel what we don’t use. I almost foregot the rental car to get around for sightseeing.

Dec 8 Montegomery or Shreevport

Dec 15 Jacksonville or Atlanta

Dec 29 Miami or LA

Dream On
