Life at Air Station Kodiak
Hello once again! I haven’t blogged in awhile, so I thought it was time to share about my duties at Air Station Kodiak and life on the base.
I am stationed at the Air Station’s supply warehouse. So techincally, what I do every day is issue out, count, sort, organize, re-bag, aviation parts for the C-130 Hercules, H-60 Jayhawk and HH-65 Dolphin. The parts range anywhere from 33 cent washers to $60,000 rotor blades!!! It keeps me busy, on my feet and I’m learning something new! Plus, I am dreaming of counting washers, nuts, bolts, screws and o-rings every night! Not really. My husband is a Navigator on the C-130’s and has circled Mt. McKinley since we’ve been here. He told our boys he visited the North Pole, so if you’re kids having something to share with Santa…let us know! :-)
As far as the base is concerned, this place is amazing!!! A small commissary (grocery store) is on base but provides you with everything you need. The gym is out-of-this-world! Not only is there a swimming pool, but plenty of cardio machines, weight room, raquet ball courts, gym, “solar therapy” room (tanning beds) and great kid activities! Did I mention the bowling alley and movie theatre? A family can live on base in government housing and not need to leave the base!! However, since a new KFC/Taco Bell recently opened…one might want to leave the base. Coast Guard Base Kodiak has so much to offer for families. I hear that in the middle of winter, if you’re bored, you’re not looking hard enough for things to do!
