Blair Finally Got Her Fire Back on OLTL

Well it’s about damn time, Blair!

I have been waiting - impatiently I might add - for Blair to take control, stand up to Todd and fight for Starr’s rights on One Life To Live.

I waited while she allowed Todd to beat up teenagers Markko and Cole and terrorize young Langston.

I waited while she sat passively by as Todd made Starr a prisoner in her own home.

And finally, FINALLY, Blair snapped out of it after watching Todd cause Starr to tumble down a flight of stairs.

And Kassie DePaiva as Blair did not disappoint.

DePaiva ran the gamut of emotions beautifully.

From the scenes when she found out 16-year-old Starr (Kristen Alderson) was pregnant, Blair went from tender moments with Starr to fierce and protective in taking a stand for her daughter against Todd (Trevor St. John).

What was most surprising to me was the scene in the hospital when Todd starts roughing up Cole and the police come.

Todd immediately looks at John McBain (Michael Easton) and blames him for calling the police.

But Blair stops Todd in his tracks, telling him it was she who called them.

Check out these scenes.

You gotta love it!

Julia’s death simply sob-worthy on AMC

Alright, All My Children. You did it. You made me cry.

Are you happy now?

I was doing fine until I watched a dying Julia telling Krystal about the things Kathy likes. Her favorite color. How she prefers creamy peanut butter, not chunky.

Such simple, mundane tidbits, but man, did they hit me hard.

It’s especially strange because Julia has been such a peripheral character since she returned to the canvas a few years back. I often wondered why she was even on anymore.

That’s not a knock on portrayer Sydney Penny. No, not at all. That lovely woman helped bring to life the beauty that was Noah and Julia. She also was one-half of the wondrous Warren and BJ on the now-defunct Santa Barbara.

But even if Sydney hadn’t managed to make such an indelible mark on my soap-viewing experiences, she would (and will) always hold a special place in my heart for her portrayal of a young Meggie in the sweepingly romantic 1980s miniseries The Thorn Birds.

Yeah, Sydney has a permanent spot as one of my favorites. (Check out another fan’s video tribute below.)

But, honestly, her latest run in Pine Valley was a waste. A waste of her talent and a waste of story-line potential.

I guess the writers just could never figure out where to fit her in this last go ‘round. Instead, they let her die … figuratively and now literally.

She went out with an emotional bang, though.

How heartbreaking was it to see her stoically refusing surgery? Smart cookie that she is, she realized her wounds were mortal. And she realized that Kathy didn’t need a front-row seat as yet another caregiver, another “mother,” slipped from this earthly realm.

The piece de resistance? The scene that still gives me chills, even as I type? Ghost Dixie leaning close, thanking Julia for taking such good care of “Kate,” and telling her that the little girl would be fine.

Julia smiled slightly and you could see the peace that washed over her as she repeated Dixie’s whispered reassurances. Then she let go.

And so did I.

I cried, AMC. Big time. And although I’m sad to see such a gem as Sydney fade from my screen, I’m glad her final scenes showcased what an effective and moving performer she truly is.

Is GH trying to make me hate Sonny?

Can you remember the last time General Hospital’s Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) actually did something decent and selfless? Something that required sacrifice from him for the sake of someone else?

Yeah. Me neither.

It’s a shame, really, what Sonny has become. He used to be one cool cat. Tough but tender. The ruthless mob boss with a soft spot for women and children. The lover, the mentor, the friend.

Now look at him. Actually, don’t. It’ll just make you seethe with anger.

I should know. I yell at the TV pretty much anytime he’s on anymore.

Did you happen to catch the past couple of shows? You know, the episodes where he basically demands that Jason (Steve Burton) take over the business so that Sonny can have a life. So that Sonny can be with his yellow-bonnet-wearing, paper-doll girlfriend and frolick with his remaining comatose-free kids.

Erg.

It just makes my blood boil that he’s once again asking Jason to clean up his mess, cater to his whims without question, while never giving a single thought to what Jason might want or need.

He hasn’t been a friend to Jason since … wow, I don’t think I can recall exactly when.

In fact, I’m having trouble recalling much of anything likeable about Sonny these days.

Certainly not his snooty, mothering girlfriend, Kate (Megan Ward), who has been an absolutely emasculating influence on him.

And certainly not the way he treats Spinelli (Bradford Anderson). Did you see the way he bullied the Jackal, knocking the young cyber genius into a wall for daring to talk about Sonny’s kids?

Wow.

There was a time when Sonny would have taken Spinelli under his wing. He would have recognized the Jackal as someone who wants to be valued, someone who wants a place to belong. And Sonny would have nurtured and guided Spinelli’s potential, rather than belittle and abuse as he does now.

Remember Stone (See above)? And a young Jason? Both are examples of the heart and soul that once inhabited Sonny.

Good luck finding those now.

Cain Rogan coming back to OLTL

It seems like every other blog I write lately has been about another high-profile return to daytime.

I almost feel like I should apologize to my readers.

But … nah.

I mean, when the news has been so good, it’s impossible not to be excited.

The latest casting tidbit comes from One Life to Live. No surprise, really, since the show seems to be digging into its treasure chest of intriguing characters from the past.

Just who is the latest announced return, joining the likes of Tuc Watkins as David Vickers, Andrea Evans as Tina Lord, Susan Haskell as Marty Saybrooke and Thom Christopher as Carlo Hesser?

OLTLCainRogan.jpg

Christopher Cousins as Cain Rogan, that’s who!

What a wonderful move, OLTL. I always enjoyed the scheming rogue with a penchant for disguises. (And he really has the most deliciously romance-novelesque name, eh?)

He and David Vickers always kind of reminded me of each other. And now they’ll both be in Llanview, offering up plenty of entertainment, I have no doubt.

Christopher is supposed to start airing in July. And with Cain’s former wife, Tina, on her way back, as well, I dare say we should have quite an adventure on our hands at OLTL.

Will Carly’s danger rule apply to Jason on GH?

I can see both sides of the Sonny/Carly custody impasse on General Hospital.

One the one hand, Carly (Laura Wright) has a point. Sonny (Maurice Benard) lives a dangerous life, he has plenty of enemies and everyone close to him gets hurt. Michael is the most recent and glaring example. I can’t blame her for wanting to distance her sons from Sonny now.

On the other hand, Sonny is Morgan’s father. And Michael’s, too, due to the fact that he (ironically, no?) forced biological father A.J. to sign over his parental rights. He wants to be in their lives. His connection to these boys isn’t just going to disappear even if he legally separates himself from them. A signature on a piece of paper isn’t necessarily going to keep them from being a target because Sonny’s enemies know Michael and Morgan are important to him.

Morgan has already lost a lot. Is it really fair to pull his father away, as well? Then again, keeping him alive and well has to be the top priority.

Who will win out? It should be interesting to see.

Perhaps what has me most intrigued by all this is where exactly will Jason (Steve Burton) fit in?

I mean, if Sonny’s too dangerous to be near the kids, shouldn’t the same apply to Jason? Especially if the mob enforcer becomes the new mob boss.

Something tells me, however, that Carly’s going to somehow “Carly logic” her way around it, like she always does.

But we’ll see.

This could be one of those rare moments when GH … and the character of Carly … actually surprise me.

Dramatic weddings never get old

Dontcha just love big, splashy weddings on soap operas?

After more than 25 years as a viewer, I still get excited to see all the pomp and circumstance. The pretty dresses. The stylish tuxes. The flowers. The vows.

Oh, yeah. And the inevitable glitch. Usually in the form of a presumed dead spouse … or a jealous ex hell-bent on revenge … or a huge secret finally revealed.

Talk about drama.

Recently, One Life to Live pulled out all the stops with the wedding of Rex/Adriana.

How absolutely stunning did everyone look? Which is apropos considering how absolutely stunned everyone was when Gigi (Farah Fath) stood up and declared her love for Rex (John-Paul Lavoisier).

Yee. Haw.

It doesn’t get much better than that, folks. That’s classic soap, right there.

Now, All My Children is gearing up for some nuptials of its own. Jesse and Angie will be tying the knot in a big to-do that promises some fireworks, especially with smarmy Robert Gardner still lurking around targeting the Hubbards.

The previews of the wedding already have me feeling giddy with anticipation. Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams look amazing. What an incredibly beautiful pair they make.

Oooh, and Greg Nelson (Laurence Lau) has returned to Pine Valley for the occasion, bringing back so many great memories. In fact, there’s already been some more flashbacks with Jenny and the rest of that 1980s crew.

It’s wonderful to see AMC actually honoring its history, particularly such a pivotal time for the show.

It’s that kind of stuff that I like to call the icing on the soap-wedding cake.

Sonny & Carly - Not Again!

I was really relating to Carly for just about the first time ever on General Hospital.

She fought for Michael when everyone else had given up on him.

Everyone else just accepted that he wasn’t going to come out of the coma.

Not Carly.

She was THE mother bear fighting for her son, never giving up…I loved that about her.

I felt for her.

Because that would be me….Never giving up.

The other good thing that came out of this storyline was the fact that Carly admitted how selfish she was and that she never should have been with mob boss Sonny because that put Michael at risk.

I’m telling you, Laura Wright as Carly deserves an Emmy next year for her strong performances throughout this storyline.

Sonny and Jason also came to their separate ephiphanies about their role in Michael’s shooting, which was a big ABOUT TIME!

But at the end of Friday’s episode, I was let down.

Let down by Carly.

She and Sonny kissed.

sonny&carly.jpg

She is going to revert to her old ways.

She is going to give in and sleep with Sonny again.

Here’s where Carly and I part ways again.

She was being so strong.

And now this.

AMC connects with Jake/ Frankie friendship

One thing I think All My Children does very well is friendships. The show devotes a lot of scenes to platonic bonding, such as Kendall and Greenlee or newer duo Erica and Carmen.

But it’s not just female friendships that get the limelight. Perhaps what impresses me most about AMC is its ability to foster bonds among its male characters.

Aidan and Tad, for example, always give me the warm fuzzies (and not just because I find them both kinda dreamy). Michael E. Knight and Aiden Turner have such an easy chemistry. It’s fun watching them work together.

Tad’s relationship with Jesse (Darnell Williams) is another prime example of a believable male friendship. There’s plenty of teasing, of course, but the heart-to-hearts these two characters share show just how deep their connection truly is. They have each other’s back, no matter what.

The newest bond to catch my eye is the kinship between Jake and Frankie. When Jake was lying in the hospital bed — haunted by memories, anxious to leave — Frankie recognized the look, recognized the desperation. After all, he had been through his own version of war.

It makes sense that Jake and Frankie would connect, and I’m so glad AMC has been smart enough to tap into that common ground. Even more poignant is the fact that Jake used to be Frankie’s mentor; now Frankie gets to return the favor, in a way.

I have quickly become a huge fan of Cornelius Smith Jr. (Frankie) and am so pleased that he is getting more story and screen time. As for Ricky Paull Goldin, I have no doubt that he’ll be a great fit as AMC’s newest, more tortured Jake. He hasn’t disappointed me yet (I was particularly fond of him as Another World’s Dean Frame}.

Hopefully, AMC will continue to nurture and spotlight a friendship between Jake and Frankie. With these two actors in scenes together, I don’t think the show can go wrong.

Maxie Jones and Damien Spinelli: An Unlikely (But Adorable) Pair

I never thought I would say this…

But I’m really liking Maxie and Spinelli as a pair.

spixie.jpg

As in a romantic pair.

I really never thought it would work for me.

Mainly for two reasons.

a. because Maxie has been sleazy and slutty and has done some pretty despicable things.

and b. because I absolutely LOVED and anticipated the pairing of Spinelli with Georgie, Maxie’s sister.

Of course they never really got the chance to be together because “Wise Georgie” was killed off the show before that happened.

Don’t get me started on that subject…..grrrrr.

Because all of the above reasons - coupled with the fact that I absolutely adore Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) and think he deserves the most loyal, wonderful love interest in the whole world - I held out little hope for my acceptance of Spixie.

However, when Maxie (Kirsten Storms) began working for Fashionista Kate Howard (Megan Ward) a metamorphosis slowly occurred.

Maxie turned from a scheming, slutty vamp into a confident, reliable, serious, hard-working young woman.

She has done a 180 right down to her clothes, which are now very classy as opposed to very slutty.

In Spinelli speak, Maxie went from being “The Bad Blonde One” to “Maxinista.”

It’s taken this long for me to actually think that I can accept this pairing - and now I love them together.

Who woulda thought?

And I know where the turning point came for me.

It was during these scenes.

Don’t you agree?

Aren’t they cute?

The Paris, Texas Crew - Plus David Vickers - Returns To OLTL

YAY!

The Paris, Texas crew is back - with David Vickers!!

Double YAY!

Everyone loves Tuc Watkins as David Vickers - because he’s just so darn funny.

And entertaining!

And he never fails to put the pizzazz in One Life To Live.

Coupled with the comedic talents of Moe Stubbs (John Rue ) and Noelle Ortiz (January LaVoy), David Vickers shines as a bus boy at the Bon Jour Cafe.

And then Vickers proceeds to tell us how he ended up at the Bon Jour, which goes from funny to funnier!

In my opinion, the Paris, Texas storyline was the most entertaining thing to come to OLTL in years.

And trust me, I’ve been watching OLTL for 35-and-change years.

I started watching back when I was in high school in good old Trumbull, CT….

Which brings me to my “small world” story.

LaVoy grew up in Trumbull, too.

Small world!

And her first acting gig was at a local community theatre called the Polka Dot Playhouse in Bridgeport, CT.

Just so happens that I did some acting there too - back in the day after graduating from college.

Really small world!

I have always like Noelle, especially when it became apparent that she and Moe had feelings for each other…..They are just so cute together!

noelle.jpg

Noelle

And I also loved her loyalty to Viki and to Gigi during the hostage situation at the Bon Jour. Noelle took care of Shane when Gigi was arrested for aiding and abetting Marcie.

Loyalty is an important trait that seems to be lacking in today’s society.

But Noelle - she is loyal.

And now that I’ve discovered that her portrayer and I are from the same hometown and have trod the same boards - well, I’m even more fond of her.

Getting back to Vickers and the Bon Jour….I can’t wait to see today’s eppy.

Especially since Friday’s cliffhanger ended with Vickers spotting Natalie and Jared kissing!

It’s particularly scandalous because Jared is masquerading as her uncle - and a Buchanan heir.

You see, Jared and Natalie know the big secret - that Vickers is, in fact, the long, lost Buchanan.

Not Jared.

So, I’m thinking, the secret is thisclose to coming out.

Dixie’s haunting of AMC’s Adam laughable

I hate to put a damper on Cady McClain’s return to All My Children, but why in blazes does AMC insist on making her more goofy than ghostly?

I mean, seriously. Er, or not.

I guess it makes sense that Dixie would get a kick out of haunting Adam, of all people. And, really, I could watch David Canary play any story line. (Heck, he even makes Krystal tolerable for me, and that’s saying a lot.)

But as I’m watching Dixie making cuckoo faces and laughing shrilly, I have to wonder: Would we, as viewers, still have wanted a Dixie return if we knew it was going to look like this?

Something tells me no.

I want to be thrilled to see Cady back on my screen. I do. Most of the time I am. I just wish they’d get to the part that really matters: Kate.

The one saving grace (apropos, no?) to this is that Tad (Michael E. Knight) will finally learn that Julia’s ward, Kathy, is really his and Dixie’s long-lost daughter. And Dixie will be instrumental in the reunion.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it seems more than fitting.

So although I’m cringing a bit at Dixie’s over-the-top haunting of Adam, I know that in the end AMC will have righted at least one wrong.

Kate will finally be where she belongs.

Diane, Max, Alexis, Jerry = Hysterical!

Did you catch those scenes Wednesday on General Hospital with Diane/Max and Alexis/Jerry at the Metro Court?

I tell you, anytime Diane and Alexis are together lately, they never fail to make me laugh.

I can’t help it.

It happens before I even realize it.

I’m sitting there watching their scenes and I hear myself laughing.

Take Wednesday.

Prim and proper super-lawyer Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) sits at the Metro Court bar and sometimes evil but super-charming Jerry Jacks getsthisclosetokissingher, when BFF and fellow super-lawyer Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) pops up from behind the bar and screams “Now who has an embarrassing attachment to a bad boy?”

You see, Alexis has been trying to dissuade Diane from dating Max Giambatti, the mob bodyguard with a heart of gold.

I just love Derk Cheetwood as Max. Always have.

And when he is paired with Hennesy, the two are just hysterical.

Meanwhile, Alexis is incredibly attracted to Jerry (Sebastian Roche)…..You know, the one who masterminded and terrorized the hostages in the Metro Court crisis under the identity of Mr. Craig.

After Diane breaks up the kiss between Alexis and Jerry - a few minutes later Diane and Max are smooching at a nearby table…..So Alexis marches over to Diane and tells her that she’s making a spectacle of herself.

And from there, the two get into a spirited discussion of who is with the baddest bad boy.

Diane launches into a diatribe about how she and Max were discussing baseball - to which Alexis retorts that Diane’s mind has turned to mush.

Never to be outdone, Diane lashed out with perhaps the best line of the day.

“Well at least I’m not choking on my own hypocrisy! How dare you come over and criticize my relationship with Max when you’re sitting over there canoodling with Mr. Craig, the Metro Court Hostage Taker!”

Touche!

Here’s the video. Check it out for yourself.

GH’s Robin needs to cut Patrick some slack

I love that Robin and Patrick are having a baby together on General Hospital. Jason Thompson and Kimberly McCullough have such natural chemistry; I believe they can make pretty much any story line work.

But, I must admit, Robin’s attitude about Patrick and his impending fatherhood is driving me a bit crazy.

I know, Patrick made it clear he didn’t want to be a father. He didn’t want to give up his freedom, he didn’t want to fail, he didn’t want to end up with a relationship like the one he has with his father … blah, blah, blah.

And I know Robin doesn’t think anything has changed.

But guess what? It has.

Before, Patrick was dealing in hypotheticals. He had no idea how he would feel if a baby became a reality. Now he does.

I just wish Robin would recognize the kind of effect her very real, tangible pregnancy could have .. and does have … on Patrick. For her to expect him to have all the answers is hypocritical considering she doesn’t have much of a clue either.

Sure, she’s known she’s wanted a baby for awhile now. Patrick, on the other hand, was convinced he didn’t.

Now that the baby is on its way, however, Patrick is proving that he does have what it takes to, well, at least be able to take care of Robin during her pregnancy. You know what? That’s an important step.

Most people, regardless if it’s a man or woman, are pretty lost when they are having they’re first child. Sometimes it can feel like riding a unicycle through a fog-filled maze. But most people make their way through it. If they’re lucky, they have someone along for the ride who’ll help them navigate the corners and curves.

If Robin would just tear down her walls and look across the rubble, she’d realize she does have that somebody in Patrick.

I understand she’s afraid to open herself up and take the chance that she’ll still end up alone in the end.

But sometimes she acts like she doesn’t know Patrick at all.

It wasn’t the hound-dogging Patrick she fell in love with; it was the kind, intelligent, flirty but monogamous man who captured her heart.

Why is she so convinced it’s the free-wheeling, womanizer part that will win out?

Cut the man some slack, Robin, and give him the chance to be a real father to your child. It’s his right, regardless of whether he planned or even initially desired a baby in his life.

Win A Personal Phone Call from OLTL’s David Chisum

Are you a fan of that formerly despicable turned boyishly charming Miles Laurence?

His portrayer - the wonderfully, personable David Chisum - is offering a chance for one lucky fan to receive a phone call from him.

David chisum.jpg

Before the writers’ strike hit, One Life To Live’s head writer Ron Carlivati was heading towards a revelation that Mile’s has a secret. But the storyline was lost in the strike.

In an effort to promote that storyline, Chisum’s fan club is offering a write-in contest to guess Miles’ secret.

Entries must be posted from May 1 to May 31 and you can enter as many times as you want. The winner will be chosen by drawing and will also receive a year’s subscription to his fan club in addition to the phone call.

The entry must include these things: Name: Address: Area code and Phone Number: I think Miles’ secret is:

The envelope should be addressed to David as such: David Chisum c/o ABC TV studios 56 W 66th Street New York, NY 10023 Attention: Mile’s Secret

Click here to get details of the contest.

I must say, when Miles first came onto the Llanview scene he was kinda creeeeeepy.

Remember…he was institutionalized for his entire life because of his horrible facial deformity until the evil Dr. Spencer Truman performed a remarkable operation, leaving him incredibly attractive.

The fact that he is Mitch Laurence’s brother, means he is tied to two of the most hated characters in OLTL history - Spencer and Mitch.

And then he slept with that hooker in order to have his first sexual experience at 40-something.

Also creepy.

Then there was that whole blackmailing Marty into marriage thing. Miles took a huge character hit.

He turned into scary Miles.

But he has since redeemed himself.

Particularly in his friendships with Roxy (Ilene Kristen) and Natalie. He has proved that he is a true friend to both.

I particularly love his friendship with Natalie (Melissa Archer).

Natalie really needs a guy friend and Miles has always been there for her.

Getting back to Chisum….He’s nice.

Soooooo nice.

And handsome.

Reeeeally handsome.

I know this because I was walking by the OLTL studio last summer, while on vacation in New York City, and there he was standing outside the studio, taking a break outside on a beautiful June day.

IMG_0386.JPG

He very kindly posed for a photo with me and chatted for a bit. He was very engaging, personable and really, really nice.

So what are you waiting for?

Start sending in your entries.

Thom Christopher joins list of OLTL returns

Wouldn’t you know it? Just when I thought it was safe to blog about something other than casting news, another round of hirings and firings crops up.

Keeping track of all these comings and goings is like watching a soap opera all in itself. Sheesh.

One Life to Live, in particular, is bringing back a lot of familiar faces to its canvas.

First came the news that Tuc Watkins would be returning as David Vickers. Soon after it was announced that Andrea Evans, the original (and delightfully vampiest) Tina Lord, would also be coming back. Then came the huge reveal that Susan Haskell, the original Marty Saybrooke, had inked a deal to return to the show.

All big news, to be sure.

But you know what caught my eye the most? And for reasons that aren’t entirely related to the world of soaps?

Thom Christopher will be suiting up again as mob meanie Carlo Hesser.

hawk2.jpg

Holy bird feathers! Hawk is once more coming to roost in Llanview!

I have loved Thom from the moment he swooped onto the screen in 1981 as a foe-turned-friend to TV’s Buck Rogers. As a young girl, I was mesmerized by Hawk, the half bird, half man with the sturdy jaw and that sexy-as-all-get-out voice.

with_Renee_2005.jpg

When that voice showed up on OLTL, I knew right away I was going to be mesmerized again.

And Thom didn’t disappoint.

He is absolutely chilling as Carlo, and I look forward to seeing what kind of trouble he’ll stir up this time around.

2008 Daytime Emmy Nominations Disappointing

All I can do is shake my head.

What happened?

What happened to Bradford Anderson?

How about Carolyn Hennesy?

Nancy Lee Grahn? Kirsten Storms? Erika Slezak? Robert S. Woods? Laura Wright? Catherine Hickland? Michael E. Knight? The list goes on and on and on….

Most of my favorites - in fact the majority of talented ABC soapsters - have been snubbed by the 2008 Daytime Emmy Nominations.

Blatantly so.

The only ABC actors to receive nominations are: Lead Actor - David Canary (Adam/Stuart Chandler) from All My Children and Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) from General Hospital; Supporting Actor - Brian Kerwin (Charlie Banks) from One Life To Live.

All fabulous actors.

Yes. Definitely.

Are they deserving?

Yes. Definitely.

But, my goodness, how can they overlook two of the brightest spots on my soap screen over the past year - Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) and Carolyn Hennesy (Diane Miller)? Those two keep me fixated on GH when most of the other stuff is FF material.

Those two give 110 percent and more each and every time they are on the screen.

Then there’s Erika Slezak (Viki) on OLTL. She IS OLTL.

She’s had a wonderful storyline and has given spectacular performances.

She always does.

But particularly this year, paired opposite of aforementioned Kerwin as her new love interest, Charlie.

And how about Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) who was revealed to be Spencer Truman’s killer and the subsequent courtroom scenes where she lapses into mental illness (though we now know she faked it to avoid prosecution.) Hickland did an amazing job with that entire storyline.

I could keep going, but you get the picture.

You can check out the list of 2008 Daytime Emmy Nominations for yourself.

I wish David Canary, Tony Geary and Brian Kerwin the best of luck.

All good choices.

And the hopes of ABC soap fans will be with them.

But there should have been more nominations from ABC.

The Daytime Emmys will be broadcast June 20 at 8 p.m.

The irony?

On ABC.
