Final board meeting for retiring superintendent

After tonight’s Kings Local Schools Board of Education meeting, there will be a reception to celebrate Superintendent Chuck Mason’s retirement.

The reception is slated to begin about 7:15 p.m. at Kings Education Center, 1797 King Ave. So, if you’ve been waiting to wish Chuck Mason a happy retired life, now’s your chance!

The district still has yet to make a decision on who’ll replace Mason. According to board President Hale Husband, the board will have a special meeting Wednesday - most of which will be held in executive session - to discuss the search. The two remaining candidates are Tom York, the former superintentendent for Edgewood City Schools and Valerie Browning, superintendent at Greeneview Local Schools.

Both candidates were grilled by parents and administrators as to what their leadership styles and education philosophies were last week. Attendees asked questions of the candidates to get a sense of the type of superintendent he or she could be.

Tomorrow’s board meeting starts at 6 p.m. The entire meeting could end up being held in executive session, but who knows? That’s what happened when I showed up to a special meeting last week. I thought maybe I’d sit in the meeting for a half hour max, but not so.

Maybe the district will make a job offer this week; maybe it won’t. Several folks have asked me when the board will make a decision. Husband has said the district would take its time replacing Mason, so who knows when a decision will be made?

When I find out, you’ll be the first to know… That’s if you keep up with pulsejournal.com.
