Albemarle Regional Health Services officials said Thursday that they are investigating a possible case of West Nile virus in Currituck County.
No further details were available, except that ARHS officials said they are working with state public health officials in North Carolina and Virginia on confirmation.
West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease and, according to federal statistics, there have been six cases in North Carolina, with two deaths.
Nationwide, there have been a total of 4,249 cases, with 168 deaths.
The majority of cases, 1,520, and the majority of deaths, 54, both have been in Texas.
