Tax Exempt?
A recent Daily Advance article indicated that the money for this benefit was being handled thru the Pasquotank Action Council, an organization that according to NC Secretary of State Records was started in 1973 by Raymond Rivers, since Mr. Rivers' Resource center did not have 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
Yet according to the IRS, The Pasquotank Action Council DOES NOT have 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Status either. Any donations to this cause are not tax deductible and any receipts are taxable.

I think any elected official needs to check any "charity" that they are speaking on behalf of, just as any contributor needs to be sure that they are contributing to a bona fide non profit organization.
