The cost of rebuilding Elizabeth Street in Elizabeth City and replacing the eastbound drawbridge over the Pasquotank River — still estimated officially at $90 million — may be reduced somewhat by using existing pilings beneath the street.

Build a high rise bridge

This bridge replacement is not a long term solution. DOT needs to be considering a high rise bridge to replace the existing bridge. A high rise would need to be located on the north side of the causeway and cross over to the knobbs creek area. A high rise would be all around a better long range solution for the area. The causeway is a hurricane evacuation route, and impeeds the flow of traffic adding to congestion. Emergency vehicles are often held up in this traffic on the way to the hospital. A high rise would take care of all of these problems, including taking many heavy vehicles off of Elizabeth street. I do wish that DOT would reconsider the current decision to replace the existing bridge with a like kind. Now is the time to act on this. It's not everyday that a descision to replace a bridge is made, so lets make the very best long term descision that we can!
