In choosing special legal counsel to help them decide the future of Albemarle Hospital, Pasquotank County commissioners Monday opted for a familiar face.

Wouldn't the same patient makeup apply
if the other two took over. Speaking only for myself, I would not leave the Sentara Family for one of the others. I don't mean to imply they are bad, it is just that if I need attention beyond the scope of AH I don't want to be sent to Duke. I want to go to Norfolk General, Leigh Memorial or VA Beach General. There is security in the association.
The Sentara Group is interested in improving the hospital. They are not buying it for status quo or lesser results. Sentara doesn't have that reputation.
No not at all, there would be business incentive for improvement
Others would have a true business incentive for improvement to keep a larger percentage of the local insured payer patient population and not canabalise from their own hospitals. It's simple business 101. None of these companies are out for our good but for business, after all they don't work for free.
Wilson is wrong attorney
No doubt Lloyd is correct but for the wrong reason. It is Wilson's work in creating the Hospital Authory Board as independant from the county they should be worried about. Any two bit lawyer can show a financial dependence between the county and the board there by negating the independence.
30 and 40 year leases are too long
You need to provide a reasonable amount of time to be able to get out of a contract. I really think the choice is obvious, Sentara. I also think you should save a lot of lawyer fees and join them now. Look at how successful all the Sentara hospitals (just 1 hour away) are.
When an AH patient needs to be transferred, where is the obvious place to transport them? Wouldn't it be nice to solidify and develop a relationship with the transfer choice?
Sentara would be the worst pick
Please read the offers or even the synopsis of the offers at. www.ahfuture.org You will quickly read that Sentara has many out clauses for supporting any of the community based organizations that our extremely large indigent population in dependent on. What will happen is that it will fall on the counties, up your taxes will go.
If Sentara were in charge,
I would have confidence in the hospital and choose it instead of Virginia. I know there are some others who would do the same. Hopefully there would be enough paying customers interested in AH to return from VA to make its financial woes not so severe.
What is your thinking as to why another Sentara has no incentive to invest but Duke or Vidant does?
I'm on the same page....
There are reasons why so many of us choose to drive across the border for our healthcare. That is money that can be brought back into our own community if this is done properly. Yes, there are other strikes against this area.... high poverty, less than highly rated schools and very little in the way of shopping/entertainment venues. All can be overcome at some point but it has to start somewhere. I've had family treated at Duke and have personally used Sentara while I have no real experience to speak for or against Vidant. I still think that Sentara would be the best choice of the three.
Look at what they are offering
They are already getting over 68 percent of our area insured paying patients. What is left is the indigent, as in 1 out of 5 citizens in Albemarle region are Medicaid, the hospital looses money on them. S only promises more employeed primary physicians, maybe one or two more employeed specialists and no plains for a regional referral hub. We need the hub to thrive.
You could also do the business structure, S is all business
If S takes over AH getting 100 percent of paying patents from NC, 68 percent go to VA and 32 percent go to AH but that is not enough to float the profitability of AH where are the increased paying patients to come from? Canabalise the patients going to VA? But that would eat into the business model of the Hospitals in VA, requiring more money from S and that means less profit.
Agreed...
Sentara is very well structured. I have used them and I've known several doctors under their network that are very happy with them. The turnover rate is nothing like what we have in this area, we have doctors that barely leave footprints in the hall before they are looking for another hospital to move to. Alot of things about AH need to change and partnering with Sentara would be a step in the right direction
You are correct but problems are more deep
You are correct but the reasons are more deep than any organization of the Hospital. Here are many reasons why - hospital is a wreak from Tanner's lack of management, high indegent population (low to no payers), high pateint severity index (very sick pateints), Schools are horrible (half a Drs workable career they have to worry about thier own children), property is too high, and lack of amenities that a larger city can provide. Sentara will keep things the way they are, they have no incentive to invest in a high indegent hospital.
