Wade Betts: I’m still working on them boolits

Wanna buy some cast boolits? Just kidding...I ain’t made any yet but I’m 'gonna.

My situation is kinda like Jerry Clower’s best friend Marcel Ledbetter when he stopped a train just to see if they wanted to buy a possum. When the engineer asked how much he wanted for the possum Marcel replied “We ain’t caught him yet. I just wanted to see if you wanted one.”

Several people on the cast boolit forum have told me welcome to the obsession. Now I know what they meant. I haven’t even cast any boolits yet and I’m hooked.

The best thing is the helpful forum members. One man has made it his mission in life to help me cast and reload my own ammo. Not only has he sent me stuff, but his buddies have also sent me stuff. I’ll come home after a hard day at work, and there is a package on my porch from somebody I don’t know.

Now I know how the Rhinestone Cowboy felt in the song with the words “getting cards and letters from people I don’t even know.” We’re not talking expensive equipment, but to box up and send something you made to a complete stranger is not something everyone does. I have gotten so many cast boolits that I really don’t need to cast any myself.

One thing is for sure - you can bet I will pay it forward.

The idea is to try out boolits and find out which ones will work for you before buying a mold. My first reloads were ugly. I seated some boolits too deep and the Expander Die either expanded too much or too little. Shooting them will tell the tale but the latest ones are impressive.

Casting and reloading will take up some of my time, but I have always tried to keep things in perspective. I always try to remember what brought me to the dance. If my latest obsession takes time away from hunting and fishing, I’ll need to rethink some things.

Wifey is a little jealous 'cause there have been no 9mm boolits. Santa brought her a pistol and she can go through a box of ammo in no time. It’s a lot of fun for me to shoot with her and try to help her become better at shooting. After I get the hang of casting and reloading 44mag boolits, I’ll need to get some dies and molds for 9mm.

As soon as the bank account recovers from Christmas, we are going to take a concealed carry class. I am looking forward to the class because we will be taking it together. I like it when the wife does outdoorsy stuff with me.
We might not carry a gun that often but we will have that option. The way the world is now, you never know.
