The Kids’ Flix outdoor summer movie series opens Friday with an 8:15 p.m. showing of “Despicable Me 2” at Mariners’ Wharf Park.

“Despicable Me 2” is the 2013 follow-up to “Despicable Me.” The sequel continues the misadventures of villain-turned-dad Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), his three daughters and an army of lovably deranged minions. In the sequel, Gru is pulled back into the villain game after a mysterious and more sinister villain steals a dangerous mutagen to further a nefarious plot. The movie is rated PG.

Kids’ Flix is free and families are invited to share the fun and fresh air at Elizabeth City’s waterfront. Now in its third season, the series features a different movie each fourth Friday of June, July and August. According to Hip Barclift, superintendent of recreation for the EC-Pasquotank parks and recreation department, which hosts the series, the July 25 film will be ‘The Lorax,’ based on the children’s book by Dr. Seuss. The film “Planes,” about a cropduster with ambitions of becoming a racer, will air Aug. 22.
