2011 Skinner Memorial Scholarships awarded

The 2011-2012 Thomas Gregory Skinner Memorial Scholarships were awarded to this year’s recipients, all students from Hertford:

In December 1955, a special fund was created and entrusted to the Vestry of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hertford, by the Thomas Gregory Skinner family. This fund is used each year to promote and provide higher education and training of “persons living in or descendants of persons formerly living in Perquimans County.” As directed by the trust, the scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of need, but scholarship, ability and character of the applicants are also important considerations.

Scholarship recipients are Peter Viselli Jr. of Belvidere, sophomore at ECPI College of Technology in Virginia Beach, Va.; Robert Scott Jacot of Hertford, junior at Elizabeth City State University; Andrew Jonathan Jacot of Hertford, sophomore at the College of the Albemarle; Rachel Phthisic of Hertford, freshman at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh; and Brooke Copeland of Hertford, freshman at East Carolina University in Greenville. On Sunday, June 26, the scholarship recipients attended the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church morning service, where they were honored and congratulated by the congregation and presented their certificates by a descendent of Thomas Gregory Skinner, Thomas Skinner Jr. of Nags Head. The Scholarships are given for one year.

Candidates may apply each spring and can request an application by contacting the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 207 South Church Street, P.O. Box 125, Hertford, NC, 27944.
