Anthony “Tony” Grieco may arguably be the Albemarle region’s newest neighbor. At the very least, he’s the Chowan Golf and Country Club’s newest chef.
The kitchen has been Tony’s playground as long as he can remember. His father was a chef in North Carolina, and other relatives have worked in the food service industry over the years.
“I’m from an Italian family, and there was always lots of cooking going on,” Tony said.
Tony recently came to Edenton after apprenticing with chefs who trained in France and Italy. He considers cooking an art form that should be taken seriously.
“While it is not appreciated like painting or literature, everyone likes to eat,” he said.
He enjoys the creativity of working with food and created delectable dishes that can be enjoyed by the public at large.
As the new chef for the Chowan Golf and Country Club, he has the freedom to be creative. His work ranges from elegant wedding and formal events, to bistro cuisine, to tournament fun foods. In other words, while he takes the culinary arts seriously, Tony is a chef for all seasons.
At the Friday and Saturday night dinners, which are open to the public, he often comes out of the kitchen to talk with the diners. Tony sayd he is interested in their satisfaction, and is open to future menu item requests.
He sees a difference in the tastes of Chowan natives and those of residents who have moved here from other parts of the country. However, he seems to be pleasing all palates.
Tony said he believes the Club offers a unique opportunity for dining in the area.
“Where else can you be by the sound, watch the sun go down, have cloth table linens, and enjoy moderately priced cuisine?” he said.
Friday and Saturday evening dining, and Sunday brunch are open to the public. Call the club for reservations or information, 482-3606 and visit with Tony.
